The Bible is a Simple Book

Theophiletos said in a comment…

Although I would hesitate to use the term “contradiction” of any parts of the Bible, whenever two passages don’t line up, I find that to be a productive tension which teaches me a lot more about what I’m thinking about improperly than when everything just sails along. It’s a very challenging book! It was meant to be!

There is another quote that goes as follows that my dad really likes…

The Bible is simple enough for a child to understand salvation, yet complex enough to keep a scholar busy for a lifetime.

I prefer my own quote…

The Bible is simple enough for a child to understand its full message and so simple that it causes the adult’s intellect to become completely frustrated.

My more simple friend likes this quote better…

I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will. (Matt. 11:25-26)

Keep reading it…

All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matt. 11:27-30)

Jesus chooses to reveal the mysteries to those who are simple. To those who want to be simple. To those who would rather be an infant. To babies. To those who are weary and heavy laden. He chooses to give rest to those people. His yoke is easy and his burden is light. This is the gospel message. It’s people who tell you that faith must have some sort of intellectual support or must be about an intellectual profession or something…these are precisely who the kingdom of Heaven is not for. Those who are trying to make the Christian faith a challenge don’t deserve the Christian faith! God has not called these people to the Christian faith. God has let them continue on in their own bantering. This doesn’t mean that people trained in seminary can’t be saved. It just means those being trained in seminary need to utilize a child-like faith as much as possible. I have high respect for seminarians–just a low respect for seminarians who try to make Christianity into an intellectual profession.
