outrageous opening by winterhill!

As I may have mentioned in a previous post, winterhill is generally much more of a hyper-modern style chess player. However, in this particular game he performs an opening that is rarely used nowadays. It’s the Benoni defense! Developed in 1825 by Aaron Reinganum, who, in a battle with depression, turned to the chessboard. Benoni meaning “child of my sorrow” in Hebrew (The Oxford Companion to Chess, 36). So winterhill (1224) and newengland7 (1183) going at each other here. I had white pieces and he had black pieces. Here’s how it went down:

1. d4 g6 2. c4 c5?! 3. d5 Bg7 4. Nc3 a6 5. Bf4 Nf6 6. Nf3 0-0 7. e4 d6 8. Bd3 Ng4 9. 0-0 e5 10. Bg5 f6 11. Bc1 f5 12. e4xf5 Bxf5 13. Bxf5 Rxf5 14. Ne2 e4 15. Ng3! Nxf2! 16. Rxf2 e4xf3?! 17. Nxf5! g6xf5 18. g6xf3 Bd4!! 19. Qg3+ Kh8 20. Be3? Bxd2?! 21. Raf1 Be5 22. Qg5 Nd7 23. Qxd8+ Rxd8 24. Rxf5 b5! 25. c4xb5 a6xb5! 26. Bg5 Rg8! 27. Be7 Bd4+! 28. Kh1 c4! 29. Bxd6 c3! 30. Rf7 Nb6 31. Rf8 c2!! 32. Rxg8+! Kxg8 33. Bf4 Nxd5!! 34. Bc1! Ne3!! 35. Bxe3 Bxe3!! 36. g4 c1=Q!! 37. Rxc1 Bxc1!! 38. h4 Kg7! 39. Kg2 h6! 40. Kh3 Kg6! 41. h5+ Kg5!! 42. Kg3 b4!! 43. Kh3 Bf4!! 44. Kg2 Kxg4!! 45. Kf2 Kxh5!! 46. Ke2 Kg5 47. Kd3 h5!! 0-1 (white resigned in this position)

Well-played games in back-to-back games between winterhill and myself. He’s a fantastic player and is really good. Most people I interact with all state this about him.

  1. It used to be that winterhill would regularly crush me but these past two games have been very well played on both our parts. We’re becoming a bit more equal right now.
